About Ramadan

O you who truly believe!
Fasting is prescribed for you,
Even as it was prescribed for those before you,
In order that you may practice true devotion. (Quran 2:183)

Sidi describes the meaning of this ayat : Oh you who truly belong to God on account of that secret in which you are sincerely devoted with your awakened mind and with the essence of your being. He says: Keep everything simple and easy for you. The important thing is always your journey face to face with your Beloved God, without anything and the month of Ramadan is a special holy time to be in this state.

The month of Ramadan is given this name because it burns away mistakes or it is like water (ar-ramad means rain in Arabic) that comes to wash away our mistakes form the physical body, allowing the heart to feel purified.

Ramadan is a time for us to fast, break our fast and come together in worship of Allah. Here at the Farm, we use every opportunity: prayer, dhikr, Quran reading, food preparation, mealtime, and clean up, to draw closer to Allah and thus come closer to each other. For 30 days we eat together, pray together, and worship together.

The Prophet Muhammad, alayhi salata salaam, said that Ramadan is broken into three parts: one for mercy, one for forgiveness and one for freedom from the hellfire. We invite various teachers to speak on these themes each day. During Ramadan, we focus on Hadith, Quran, and Sidi’s teachings.

Early afternoon is time for various teachers to inspire our hearts.

About an hour before magrib we gather to read the Quran together (we read 1/30th or one juz a day) and we then reflect on what we have read. Through the discussion about what touched our hearts or what questions the Quran reading brings up, we grow together in knowledge of Allah’s holy word and it becomes more embedded within our beings.
